The African Serval (Leptailurus serval) is a medium-sized wild cat native to sub-Saharan Africa, known for its distinctive spotted coat, long legs, and large ears. With its slender build and unique appearance, the serval is an exceptional predator, primarily hunting small prey in the savannas and wetlands of Africa.
Key Characteristics:
- Size: 21-24 inches (53-60 cm) at the shoulder
- Weight: 18-40 pounds (8-18 kg)
- Coat: Golden-yellow with black spots and stripes
- Lifespan: 10-12 years in the wild, up to 20 years in captivity
The serval’s long legs and large ears give it a significant advantage in hunting, allowing it to leap up to 10 feet in the air to catch birds and detect the slightest sounds of its prey. Its diet mainly consists of rodents, birds, insects, and small mammals. While solitary and primarily nocturnal, servals may also be active during the day, depending on the availability of food.
Although some people keep servals as exotic pets, they remain wild animals that require special care. In their natural habitat, they contribute to controlling prey populations, making them an essential part of African ecosystems.
